A Case Study: Travel & Tourism Photography at Fair House Villas

Advertising, Shoots, Travel

Thank you Fair House Villas & Spa for the opportunity to shoot at your beautiful location on Koh Samui, Thailand.  The challenge of the assignment was to produce strong visuals without talents or models to add energy.  It was all about featuring the accommodation and location.  With one day to shoot, we had to work quickly and were always on the lookout for dramatic lighting for each subject.  In post-production, I balanced out color & exposure with a custom dodge & burn and then finished them in a high contrast, saturated color treatment to add punch.  Please enjoy the shots.  Feel free to comment or ask questions below.

Inspirations, Musings

Sometimes I dig through old work to see where I came from and (hopefully) to shed some light on my path going forward.  This sort of self-examination can be humbling with examples of bad lighting, bad retouching, bad composition…  Ugh.  But then, I need to remind myself, this is how you improve as an artist!

At other times digging through the old work shows the artistic path not taken.  Case in point: below is a shot from a series that I did around 2007/2008.  I was looking for something new and this ethereal blown out look wasn’t as ubiquitous as it is now.  I’m still very drawn to this shot after all these years.  I wonder where I would have taken it if I continued on this path?
